13/30 Rising

I can feel them trying to come
the prickle the sting
prying their way from me
escape attempt

but I refuse to let them fall
let them make this moment more erasure
than it already is

I hold them a talisman
breath
I hold that too as
long as I can
one exhale on the wrong side of mourning
could drown me deeper than the last time

so I hold them in
the shudder of my chest
a reminder of what happens
when your heart turns library
loaned out to diinterested readers
who care more about the cliff notes
less about the story

everyone has
only few read it back to themselves
stuck on the same pages
reliving past transgressions
like a recipe to find something
that was always lost
even in the retelling

they are still burning for release
but
if I let one fall
they will all cue up
fall forever

I think
best to hold them in
at least until this wave passes
store them up
to water something
that might possibly grow

12/30 For the Love of God and Everything Holy, Body, It's Bread. We Love That shit!

I have occupied this body for a very long time
and there are some betrayals I expect
some of these balance themselves out
menstruation for menopause
200 bucks yearly flushed away for decades,
saved
in some account I call
have fun not babies no more

the stretch marks that replaced smooth skin
I rationalized that one away
called it a road map to places traveled
called it the bumps along the way taught me
how to navigate better
called it braille for a lovers touch

this geographic tongue
I rationalized it called it
your tongue has tasted too much bitter
now time for all the sweet
called it all the kissing tastes better
called it whoever,
whatever you put in your mouth is savored
in a way that confuses the alphabet

when my body starts doing the strange
a random elbow rash,
the phuck?
bizarre pinking around the eyes and swelling lips
the hell?

clearly an allergic reaction
but to what I think
I don't ask my body
she's on some other shit right now
if she doin what I think she's doin

the last time I asked my body
if I was really allergic to something
let's call them oranges
because I love oranges
and their cousins all things citrus
my body said
"yes,
yes, Theresa
you are allergic to oranges"

I said, "not today body,
not today"

to show her, I ate a bag of oranges
yeah, I ran a little fever and the rash went away
eventually
but in the way off all vaccinations
you give yourself a bit of the poison
your body will provide a defense,
I am no longer allergic to oranges
I am however still allergic to the peels
so I can't peel those fucker
but I will eat them all
cause my skin does it's own thing and since
it is the largest of all the organs
I let her do her what she do
mostly

but last week,
last week I noticed the elbow rash
pink rash around my eyes and lips
thought, oh hell no

so like the orange experiment
I ate all the bread,
it got worst so
I denied myself all things delicious
for 24 hours
the symptoms calmed
I went out for dinner
I want the biggest fucking burger you have

and it was OK the first few bites
by bite five
my lips started burning the swelling began
my elbows were itching as if
they could scratch themselves
I remained calm, resisted the urge to
drop to my knees and scream to the heavens

"Noooooo, bread!
Has thou forsaken me?
Does thee doubt my love
my devotion you fickle ass delicious lover"

but bread
I knew bread wouldn't hear me
she always cheating up in here on everybody's plate
right in front of me
besides my friend works at this restaurant
hey Anisa
it would have been weird
and my allergicness to possible police involvement
is one I have no issue with

so, the scene happened in my head,
loudly
as I wondered if it was just bread,
prayed lord, let it be just bread

next week the beer experiment
but in the mean time,
I found this gluten free vodka, his name is Tito,
as I mourn my lover bread
Tito, tonight he has got my back
unlike this body

7/30 Variations

in the first dream
i wake naked           wonder the house

i do not recognize
i think i know what this means           but not yet

in each room i find some forgotten thing
or some lost item of clothing
or some part of me I've neglected

on the stairs there are a pair of shoes
i have never been before

they accuse me of running off at the mouth
of counting things i do not own
they sit there in their shiny blues
                a sad song
i do not know the words to

in the kitchen
the ramshackle that is my heart
leans a soggy mess on the counter
every other beat it calls her name           in a whisper shout
that

i can not hear
because my ears
are no longer connected to my head
and i think i know what this means
                                                                   not yet

the last room i care to search
is not a room at all
it is the hollow of a throat i loved
it is my right arm atrophied
missing the form of her gone body
it is the waist deep in memory
                   and missing all the points

i have never lived here
like i thought
this house has forgotten the shape of me
if i ever find my eyes
maybe they will tell me something different
echo myself back

i think i know what this means
                                                              not yet

5/30 Logophobia

Logophobia

there have always been words
that say what need to be said
exposing to the light
that which loves the dark spaces
in our bodies
in our world
we collect these words
one behind the other
string them along
make them make sense
fill our mouths to the brim
with the texture of them
a collection of thought
figured out
and then
something changes
not the climate of course
we have been told this does not exist
along with all the other thing
we are told does not exist
by way of attaching prefixes
post-
anti-
pre-
a way of resurrecting fears
that never died in the first place
always there lingering in plain sight
we become other words
combinations that did not exist before
a new list of collective nouns
new words to describe
the systematic grooming of a group
to be referred to as one entity
be us person,
place
thing
state of mind of being
in this new collective
we become a litany of nothing scientific
though fully recognizable
I mean,
just the other day
in what I thought
was a civilized conversation
my unwillingness to agree with false facts
turned me in their eyes
into a battlefield of belligerence
a cacophony of chaos
such a criticism of compromise
a concern of community
the more I refused to bend my tongue
to their will
I watched them become
a clutch of pearls
a bullet of bullies
a boast of orange
shrouded in an agony of shortsightedness
they issued a warrant of warnings
wrapped in an abortion of anger
who would fear a murder of crows
when surrounded by
a disassembly of democracy
a hazard of humanity
a choke of holds

I did a workshop today and had a blast!

Making the Invisible, Visible.
If you are an educator pose the question, "Give me an example of an invisible worker." to your students. The responses will be interesting. Check out the work of Martin Espada, the poems I used for this workshop were, Jorge the Church Janitor Finally Quits and Imagine the Angels of Bread. Powerful stuff. Also his response to Nike when they wanted him to write poems for their product.
"you must be totally and insultingly ignorant of my work as a poet" ~Martin Espada
Here's my poem from the workshop.

No Vacancy
in the hours after your departure
or before your arrival
I ghost through
take away what was left behind
the mess and bother
the unflushed and thrown to the floor
bulldozing the refuse of your
affairs illicit or otherwise
I make right and ready
wash, wipe and fold
the discarded made tidy again

a visitor in some strangers house
a specter in the closet
next to the iron on the shelf
an extra blanket to throw off the chill
no one thought to tip
no hush money for the mess
for the detritus of forgotten food
or what was left on the sheets
no point to complain aloud
no one will hear over the whir of vacuum
over the secrets hugging the walls

there are beds I will never sleep in to make
a room that must be picture perfect
just the right temperature
so the chocolate never melts

The History of Storms

there are thing that cannot be known
by those who do not a know

air

so gentle
seizing of all that was once innocent
once sweet turned sour in the unknowing
that can never be known
unless we were there
we were not

there is a softness
a sickness there
one turned malignant

diseased

one longing for cure
but not knowing how to ask

there is always a way to ask
unless
there isn't

there is a table there

one flipped time and time again
in a breeze
disguised as soothing
as knowing
as invisible as the wind

that

ruffled your hair
that time

the thing about air

about wind
about breezes

is that every one needs it
even as it cannot be seen by eyes
focused forward
in a war no one enlisted for
drafted
none the less
no one can win
because that is not the goal

burn it all down

in the ruin of it all
the temperature risen so high
it calls for emergency rooms
for evacuation
for oceans
moving in the wrong direction
shots fired
there are always shots fired

condensation has no choice
it lands on our faces
a failed attempt to wash
something so dirty
clean
impossible

there is no right answer
there is no next time or tomorrow
there is only rain and questions
only windows
forced open
and and paperwork

only debris and broken boys
only answers not asked for
only band aids where surgery was required
only questions we will never know the answers to

truth no longer resides in your tongue

your heart turned detritus
turned vengeful
cloaked in revisionist history

there are things that cannot be known
answers that were never questioned

a fish that took on to much air
found it was unable to float

decided fuck it

if I drown in my home
we all drown in my home

despite the wet
it will all burn
the flames will burn it all

there is always
air to feed the flames

always

11/30 Crop

Crop means "to plant or grow" and "to cut or harvest"

11/30 Crop

She spoke of organs
Of separating him from his essence
Harvest

I remember joy
Bountiful behind his eyes
Now covered with tape

4/30 The Play

actors on a stage performing radical leftist ideology
experimental theater in the round
low comedy performed without words
a variety show full of tragedy and melodrama

experimental theater in the round
the reviews are terrible a comedy devoid of laughter
A variety show full of tragedy and melodrama
the audience remains unmoved

the reviews are terrible a comedy devoid of laughter
realistic dialogue full of suffering and human existence
closet drama then black out; everybody breaks a leg
the audience remains unmoved

Navigation 2/30

getting arrested at fourteen
was not my best look

the girl with brass knuckles
didn't have my best interest in heart

she wanted me oblivion
while I was determined
not to be punched in the face

our opinions differed
but my motive was always clear
defend yourself

you are all you have

and just for the record

had I known at the time
I was fighting about a boy
things may have gone differently

but in the bathroom
handling the things
you handle in a bathroom

but when
some girl with anger
a color never seen
behind her eyes
rushes you in a bathroom stall
all sudden like

you channel your inner ninja

you balance beam toilet seats
make your hands an anchor
run aground in hair
navigate the cannon blast away
always away

and when you find yourself moored
upon the shoulders of a girl

who wanted to sail her knuckles
covered in shiny
into your face

you find comfort in the waves
lashing your back
be it ocean
or commode

and when the officer demands
you let her up
you launch yourself
into his arms

while the porcelain mermaid girl
declares the scattered rings of brass are yours
between sputters

you might find yourself arrested

mother worried
Atlanta children missing
murdered
your bed empty
while feet pace floors

you could find yourself
in seventy two hours
facing the only person
you ever shared a body with
holding a one way ticket in her hand
a suitcase holding what's left of you
stowed in a trunk

you may find yourself riding a dog
back to the one man
you could never respect

getting arrested
at fourteen

changes everything

forever

1988

That year I forgot the sound of my name
could barely make out the shape of it
curves once smooth turned sharp
found myself repeating old habits
falling back into familiar like so many second thoughts
holding myself to my ears
hearing the ocean
longing for home
that name I forgot a siren song lulling me
into crash and sink
it began that name with tongue pressed to teeth.

That same year I became somebody's wife,
somebody else's mother
didn't recognize either of them
strangers teeming beneath my skin
impostors in the mirror wearing my eyes
complacent in my undertow
shredding what was left of the remnants
and still I answered ever time I heard that name.
That thunder clap and banshee scream
that who I used to be
before I forgot her name.

Queer Lodgings (rough)

the initial cringe did not surprise
elicited no response
comfort turning uncomfortable
stumbling tongue
everywhere hands convey distress
you cannot hold my eyes

I do not move
watch the miles race through you
all over the room
there in no air in your world
no fear of danger not looking for you
it does not exist
it never did

ignorance was your bliss
what you didn't know,      you really did
the struggle drapes your frame
hand me down opinions
in all the wrong colors
I understand you are drowning
I am not your undertow
I did not throw your voice all over the room
spouting homophobic like a geyser of disgust
all stereotype and conjecture

I know first hand what you think of my kind
the empress is wearing no clothes
I see all of you

you showed me your skin
I showed you mine

there is a reason you didn't know
you equated lifestyle with intelligence
decided to delete what you knew to suit your needs
perhaps you imagined me closeted
as in hush
and shame

now the awkward has settled
you look at me like I want from you
I watch the the questions slot through
then something slides behind your eyes

you wonder if I find you attractive

it's my turn to cringe

Two Figures with Flowers

I am two states away staring
at the same picture that hangs on a wall in your house
it reminds me of the last time I saw you
flames in the background.

I am staring at this image
remembering how tired I felt in that moment
when you shifted into shallow
all my limbs aching from confinement
my heart on the floor
torn between the relief
the freedom of closeted love
and the grief of losing you.

Two states away my hands
my hips
remember the feel of lust in the dark
away from prying eyes
a secret I could not keep
not for long
your body's press on me
the way I reveled and moaned.

Tomorrow I will leave this state
a steering wheel trapped between my fists
headed back to my life
the one you never inhabited fully.

Is it coincidence that this painting
exists in two different states
or that you attempted to siren song me
back into your bed of lies
or that my hands crave the geography of you?

I have been looking for home
in all the wrong closets
in all the wrong smiles
welcomed more warmly by strangers
than by you, who claimed to know me
or want to.

This painting
these two figures
they peer out so full of sadness and regret
I feel they may be warning me
the smaller figures eyes
seem to implore reminding me

"remember what happened last time"

the flowers have nothing to report.

Still Life With Scissors 11/30

forgetting you is not working
your face shows up in my coffee
so I suffer cup after cup in silence
with my memories and shaking hands

your shadow etched itself on my ceiling
there you drift at night discrediting my new lovers
mocking their steaming skin
your name on the tip of my tongue
confusing my orgasms

I can forget you for a time
if there be ocean and sand
jelly fish and tides
when you be far off in the distance
an island I cannot travel towards
me on the shore
waving good bye to the war between us

I can move away from you

with the ocean in my face
the salt in my eyes
remembering my gills and scales
releasing the weight of you
I can forget you at the ocean

but in rush hour traffic
you return road rage
a balled fist in my throat
an articulated fuck you
held hostage in the roof of my mouth
eyes everywhere at once looking for the exit
a way to make the lies stop
changing lanes to the tune of your mood
no signals
just acceleration

all the things I loved about you
I still love

so I question if I even know what love means
I mean is it love
when someone accordions you
into every success they’ve never had

Is it love
if they can only love you behind closet doors

is it love
when you make me feel clean and filthy
between blinks

Like-Like

When she touched me the way she touched me.
I liked it. I told her that I liked it. She told me she knew I would.
I said I’d like-like more, please.
“Like-Like?” her smile repeated, “What’s that?”
So, I untangle myself from herself and I told her
what I am about to tell you.

As it was explained to me by my twelve year old son
there are two kinds of like. There is like and there is like-like.
Like is, “I like you.” Like-like is, “Yeah, I LIKE you.”
He is explaining the phenomenon of “like” to me
because he like-likes a girl at school. He tells me how
pretty she is, how they sat together at lunch
and had a conversation. She is so smart and,
“Mom” he says, “she is so nice. I like-like her.”

My heart swells, crashes partly because he is more like me
than I imagined, and mostly because he is more like me
than he knows. I, like him, am a sucker for a beautiful,
smart girl who eats food and can have a conversation.
I also sweep up the shattered shards of my heart
every time a girl breaks it. My son will have his heart
broken a lot. He is just like his mother.

I want to warn him. Explain what the hopeless
in hopeless romantic really means, but I don’t really
believe that shit. I will not believe that romance,
in love or like-like is hopeless. I love the way his face
breaks open when he talks about sharing ideas
with this girl he like-likes. The way he wants to give her art.
I don’t care that he uses all of my paint. He wants to gives her art.
He is just like his mother. The day he stars penning poems
I will arrange the intervention. He gives her art, and he +art
is his heart and she will break it.

When it happens we will snuggle on the couch,
eat comfort food as we commiserate. I will have ice cream
he will eat those Cheetoes that bear no resemblance
to any color on the wheel. We will hold each other up.
The way he held me up when heartbreak just looked like
mom is sad. He brought me cookies back then, a small bite
taken out of each. Making sure they were good and
would not hurt me.

The day he comes home and tells me the girl refused his gift.
He calls his hard work, his consideration, and his art junk.
He tells me he is stupid and that he thought they were friends.
He wishes he could have known some how that she didn’t
like-like him the way he like-liked her. I ask if I can have his heart.
His art. I tell him I like-like him just fine. I wonder if this will jade him.
Before I can get to lost in that thought he tells me about the girl
who sits next to him in science. “She’s pretty mom and she doesn’t
make girly noises when we do something gross in class.
I like her, not like-like, just like.” he says.
I think, “Son you will like-like her soon, because you are so full of hope.
You are just like your mother.”

After the story my girl, she whispers in my ear
tells me she likes-likes me a giggle on her tongue.
I know she will break my heart, but I have hope.
I am just like my son.

So, when she touches me the way she touches me.
I like it. I tell her I like it. She tells me she knew I would.
I say I’d like-like more, please.

On Holding Your Tongue

On Holding Your Tongue

She thinks she remembers the way the girls hands hovered.
She wanted to know the touch of them. Wanted to feel fingers
massaging her memories back to before she forgot
to pay attention. Bit her lips pretended it was the girls kiss.

Morning on the other side of I miss you is not her happy place.
On those mornings she sleepwalks her way to forgiveness
gets stuck in regret and barely manages to keep her bones
above quicksand. She checks her pockets. Finds her tongue
attempts to re-anchor it so she can finally speak. It’s a bad fit.
Falls to the floor. She can’t remember the last time beauty
made her jaw drop.

The girl with the hovering hands wore an apprehensive smile.
Mona Lisa, but darker. The girl held secrets between her thighs
and sometimes when they shared she knew everything.
She would float sometimes, the girl with hovering hands,
hold clouds between her teeth. She would blow kisses
over her right shoulder. She thinks she remembers catching
those kisses. Placing them in her pocket right next to her tongue
promising to blow them back to the girl once she figured out
how to disguise blood spatter.

She thinks she remembers why things failed. The girl with
the apprehensive smile never knew that she cut out her tongue
so she’d never say anything to drive her away. So the girl,
her hands and her smile mistook silence for disinterest
instead of the adoration it was born to be. She thinks she
remembers trying to speak. No sound came.

Midnight on the other side of I miss you is failing moonlight
and false memories. Those nights she roams an empty house
checking the corners for hovering hands. She collects the dust she finds
sprinkles it on her open wound heart and hopes for concrete. She fumbles
with sewing needles and razor wire trying to stitch back her tongue
so she can finally say what she feels unafraid of letting the blood show.
She thinks she won’t forget this time because she can’t remember

anathema 6/30

anathema 6/30

voices raised intensely
attempt to assuage blood lust
spinning disdain pushing buttons
mortified
fists aloft
exudes displeasure
unjust
unfair
emotions vacillate
indecision about what’s more important
reiterating rhetoric
because if it’s repeated
it is truth
it is just
it is fair

how therapeutic
this atrophy of marching in the moment
this outrage at heinous behavior
this indoctrination of misdirection
spin dizzy
follow the smoke

they hope you don't notice
in the interim

all of the flames licking your back

11/30 Speak No Evil Especially If Its The Truth

(this will be a recurring theme, like therapy, i need it out of me)

I’ve been holding my tongue
Deep in the recesses of my cheeks
The words they hold could rock a world
Remove a stain
And set my spirit free

But freedom isn’t mine right now
I am locked in the gravitational pull
Of the pupils in my students eyes
I want to walk the walk with them
Until we are forced to walk in different directions

Don’t want to be the lair that said they’d be there then they weren’t

Don’t want to be the false prophet that said I got your back before you felt the blade

If I be the last vestige of truth in our world for just a little while longer
I’ll take the just a little while longer

Lace my words with metaphor and white truths
So faint they’ll barely recognize themselves

Hold to the shadows
Only let you see me in daylight

I have killed nothing beautiful here
So they cannot call me ugly

I have said nothing that is not true
But still they call me liar

So I will hold my tongue

The one that bites and stings
The one that tears down what disappoints
The one they will dress in slanders old clothes

I will hold it because my children need me

The ones who once called my womb home
And the ones on loan to me

I have your back
Even if my hands cover my mouth

9/30 Carnival

What it was like before this
was confusing
like running through sand
walking on water
you misrepresented your intentions
put me on the back burner
left me simmering until I burned for you
you never wanted this
what you wanted was supplicant
I never was good at that
but you pushed and pulled me off course
you are something like a enigma
a puzzle
and I am good at those
but I am not good at you
we both know it
but we insist on trying to tug of war ourselves
into the present
I presented myself as what I was
you liked it
until you didn't
but it's what we knew
We knew what would happen
right here right now
what are you doing right now?
Not me because I'd notice
I can't pretend we weren't pretending
we seem to do that well and we will probably do it again
and again
we are merry-go-round love
circling each other like so many vultures
we are thick like thieves
and our bones hold more meat than most could handle
we handled each other
well,
now
let the scavengers feast

6/30 Pop Tart Love an erotic tale of hot damn!!!

Pop Tart Love an erotic tale of hot damn!!!

I put you in my mouth
Savored and exalted your praise
The way you fit
The way you teased
I thought I knew your name
Remembered you from a fling in the past
You’d changed your packaging
And once released from your holdings you
Took hold of me had your way with my taste buds

These children
They have now idea
They tell me you are gross
I tell them watch their mouths
They snicker
They stare
They are jealous
And they should be

The toaster is close but I wanted you raw
Wanted you in the palm of my hand
You wanted it too
And if you had a mouth I am sure you’d say it
But talk is cheap
And this coffee cup won’t fill itself
Right next to the toaster
I pop in your twin

These children
They are so........ them
They insist I’m going to burn you
Just because I burned something the day before
They know nothing of our relationship
And I am sure that if you had ears
You’d ignore them as well

You are so hot!
I can barely hold you
Burning the tips of my finger
My tongue
You are the shit!!!
And if you were a person
Had a face and a pulse
Some lips I could nibble
A chin would be nice
If you had feet or legs
Or a torso
Or arms
I imagine you’d hold me like I am holding you now
And if you had a gender
You could be the woman of my dreams
But in reality
You are a tickle to m fancy
A memory remembered

You are some damn good taste bud loving
And the best thing
Is that there are seven other pairs of you
Waiting for me
At home
You might be jealous
If you had feelings and a heart
And fingers so you could point them at me
Or flip me the bird
I promise
I will love your sisters
No less than I loved you

Pumpkin Pie Pop Tarts
A love affair begins…
For a limited time
Or at least that’s what it said on the box!
